What Does He Want From me?

Have you ever had to question yourself in a way to check that you are actually on track with the expectations of a friend or anyone you have a relationship with? What does my child expect of me? What does my spouse expect of me? What does my boss expect of me?  What level of readiness does my future self expect of me that needs me to make adjustments today and now? What does God expect of me?

As long as you share a connection or have a relationship with anyone, it is always important to evaluate expectations, so as to gain clarity of purpose and avoid misuse, abuse or crashed expectations.

For a minute, let us shift the lens to God, our heavenly father. What does He expect of us? If we get this right, it will sure guide us to navigate or gain insight into other relationship expectations. The key is this: there is always a starting point and a reference point in navigating relationship expectations. For God, it's the bible. What does the bible say about Gods expectations of us?

Mark 3: 13-15 (NIV) Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.

Before we go about doing mighty things for God, He wants us to answer His call to fellowship, to be with Him, to spend time with Him, to have fellowship with Him. This is His desire. The very first thing He wants, and thereafter, as we can see from our bible text, He empowers us for ambassadorial living. But first, He wants us to know Him. To spend quality and quantity time with Him. To get clarity and direction from Him first, so we can tackle life correctly. God has called us to Himself, He wants us to come to the table of fellowship. It is during this time of fellowship with Him that He rubs off on us. We are changed into His likeness.

(psalm 17:15 KJV As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.)

So, what can we sacrifice today to spend that time with Jesus devotionally? What can we do today to prioritise fellowship? What can we do today to meet Jesus’ expectation of us on a daily basis? These are honest questions we have to ask ourselves and answer them too, so we don’t end up misusing the open channel we have in Jesus, thinking we have a flourishing relationship with Him when we truly do not. Without fellowship, we cannot preach nor have authority to drive out demons as is clearly stated in Mark 3:15.

Amazingly, by spending time studying Gods word and praying, we would find the underpinning expectations of all sorts of relationships embedded in His holy word- what we must do and what we must avoid.

Today, spend time to answer those questions honesty and commit to restoring a flourishing relationship with Jesus Christ.

God bless you.

Amen.
