Words Are Powerful Pt 2

“There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.” Proverbs 12:18 What we say is important! It is powerful. The content of our words have great potential; either to destroy or to build, to demote or to promote. Notice the expression from the verse that we just read...'There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword....'. In other words, the words that were spoken or said are likened to using a sword to pierce through someone: devastating words that leaves the hearer hopeless. It means that the content of our words has the ability to produce such effect on someone. Sometimes we may not be aware of this while at other times it might be intentional. Sometimes we can instantly notice the impact of our words on the person by their immediate expressions or reactions. On the other hand, the content of our words also has the potential to promote health; bring healing and restoration; mend the broken hearted; bind the wounds of someone. '...But the tongue of the wise promotes health'. In other word, spoken words have the potential to promote, build, encourage and restore. Another highlight on this verse is regarding the divide on the effect of the content of our words which leaves us with a choice. Hence, we do have a choice. The choice which endears us to begin to watch our tongue and what we say. This choice causes us to reflect on the effect of what we say, which in turn leads to an improvement in the content of our words. “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” Colossians 4:6. Again, notice the expression “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt,...” 'Let your speech' means - we have a responsibility; we can decide on the content of our words or speech; we can change or amend our word if we choose to. The verse simply admonishes us to let it be filled with grace (content) and season it with salt (choice words). Have a quick look and reflect on the content of your words in the previous week. Were they kind words? Were they encouraging words? Were they uplifting words? Were they motivating words? Were they loving words? Were they graceful or gracious words? Were they seasoned words? If not, take some time and think about these to see how you can improve on the content of your words henceforth. You will surely see a remarkable change in the lives of those around you. Also take some time and meditate on Proverbs 12:18 and ask the Lord to help you.
Have a great week. God bless you. Amen.
